Budapest Art Residency

The BARTR artist-in-residence program is held twice a year in Budapest. The program is nine weeks long and hosts 10 artists per session.

Each session includes a well organised program of workshops, lectures and studio visits. The concept behind this format is to give residents a chance to engage with as many local initiatives as possible, while allowing enough time for self directed work. Participation in the program and workshops is optional, but encouraged.

In addition to the program, residents are expected to prepare a body of work for the final exhibition to be held at the end of the residency.

Budapest’s vibrant cultural scene demands a measure of independent exploration and we will be here to guide you and help you find what you are looking for while you are staying with us.

Current calls:

  • 2017 spring session: april 15–june 18
deadline: january 1 (fee supported)/ january 15 (fee paying)
  • 2017 autumn session: october 8–december 10

Program costs

The fee for each nine week long session is 1000–1200 EUR, depending on the accommodation chosen by the resident (private or shared).

The fee covers accommodation, studio space, and the workshops. Residents are expected to cover their travel costs, material costs and daily expenses. Some materials can be bought directly from BARTR at subsidised prices.

One fee supported place is offered each session. The recipient will not be required to pay the residency fee but will still be responsible for travel costs, material costs and day to day expenses.

It is free to apply.
