Fellowships for photography on global health

photography globalSince SocialDocumentary.net launched in 2008, our tagline has been “Using the power of to promote global awareness.” We are now making this the theme of our next call for entries. Two Grand Prize winners will be each awarded a $4,000 fellowship to spend up to two weeks documenting the global health projects of Management Sciences for Health (MSH), www.msh.org. An additional monetary award and two honorable mentions will be specifically honored by SDN. SDN is especially excited to announce that all winner’s work will be featured in an exhibition at powerHouse Arena, Brooklyn, NY, February 27 to March 23, 2014. Deadline for entries: Midnight EST, September 28, 2013




Entry fee: $35

SDN is seeking submissions that are founded in using photography to increase our understanding of complex global issues. Specific topics may include, but are not limited to, problems of and solutions to global health, conflict, security, the environment, human trafficking, loss of traditional cultures, domestic violence, energy, incarceration, climate change, the Arab Awakening, and other issues of global concern.


  • Two Grand Prizes: MSH Photography Fellowship: Two winners will each receive a Photography Fellowship with Management Sciences for Health (MSH). $4,000 honorarium and up to two weeks of expense-paid travel in one to two of the countries in which MSH works. Travel will occur between December 2013 and June 2014. (See below for further details on the MSH Photography Fellowship)
  • SDN Documentary Prize: $1,000 cash award
  • 2-3 Honorable Mentions

All winning entries will participate in an exhibition at powerHouse Arena, Brooklyn, NY, February 27 thru March 23, 2014. There will also be a web-based component to the exhibition. SDN and MSH will pay all printing and preparation costs for the exhibition.

All winners will be evaluated by the following criteria:

Submitted work must incorporate strong visual imagery and narrative, telling a visual story that increases our understanding of issues of global concern. These can be local issues that would be of interest to a global audience.

In addition, MSH Photography Fellowship winner will be evaluated by the following criteria

  • Submitted work and résumé must demonstrate ability to photographically document challenging situations resulting in strong visual imagery and narrative.
  • Photographer must provide evidence of past experience working independently in the developing world and/or countries in conflict.
  • Submitted work must demonstrate ability to show dignity and hope while engaged in photographing challenging global health situations.

  • Submissions deadline: Sept. 28, 2013
  • Judging period: Oct. 2-16
  • SDN & MSH announce winners: November 8, 2013
  • Travel begins/ends for MSH Photography Fellowship: December-June 2014
  • Exhibition at powerHouse Arena: Feb 27 – March 23, 2014

Requirements specific to MSH Photography Fellowship

Photographers selected for the MSH Photography Fellowship must:

  • Provide all his/her own photography equipment.
  • Have valid passport. (MSH will arrange for any appropriate visas).
  • Possess strong spoken English language skills.
  • Available for up to two weeks of travel to between January and June, 2014.
  • In addition to the photography part of project, prepare and execute a one-day training program for MSH local staff.
