Open to: Anyone can enter our competitions. If you wish to enter the Professional competition, you will not be able to enter the Open competition. If you wish to enter the Open competition, you will not be able to enter the Professional competition. If you wish to enter the Youth , you will not be able to enter either the Professional or Open competitions.

The Sony World Photography Awards are FREE to enter.

Through conducting a range of annual competitions, our mission is to discover talent across many diverse fields of photography. We support photographers beyond just receiving their award; featuring their work across the WPO website and in international exhibitions, offering unparalleled exposure through our annual marketing campaign and international media coverage, and publication inside the annual Sony World Photography Awards book.

The Sony World Photography Awards now includes more competitions and awards than ever before, with each one appealing to photographers of different levels:

  • Open Competition – for amateurs and enthusiasts. Offers 10 diverse categories for you to enter, ranging from Action to Travel. As a WPO Member, you can enter up to 3 photographs for free, submitted into one category or spread across multiple categories.
  • Professional Competition – for serious photographers with a true passion for the job. Has 15 diverse categories spread across 3 genres of photography: Fine Art, Commercial, Photojournalism & Documentary.
  • Youth Award – for anyone under the age of 20. There are three great categories available to enter that will allow you to illustrate your blossoming photographic talent; Culture, Environment and People. You can enter a maximum of three photographs across the categories.
  • Moving Image Award – for those experimenting with moving image narrative formats
  • Student Focus – for higher education photography students aged 18 – 28

Award

  • Title of “Sony World Photography Awards Open Photographer of The Year” with $5,000
  • Sony World Photography Awards Professional Photographer of the Year  is our most coveted prize, the L’Iris d’Or, along with prize money of $25,000.

Winners of each individual category will receive:

  • Title of “Sony World Photography Awards category name Winner
  • Winning image showcased in the winners exhibition and the winners book
  • International exposure on the WPO website
  • Global media coverage
  • Sony digital SLR camera equipment
