The open west is an annual open competition and exhibition inviting work from national and international artists practising contemporary and conceptual art in the fields of painting, installation, film and sound, textile, photography, ceramics, print, drawing, performance and sculpture.

Up to 50 artists will be included in the exhibition, each with the possibility of showing more than one work. The selected artists will show their work throughout the interior, the cloisters, the crypt and the internal gardens of this important site which has a reputation for showing ambitious contemporary work. the open west exhibition will be the first of its kind to show work of such diversity of medium and scale at the Cathedral. This predominantly secular exhibition, while remaining sensitive to its medieval setting, will offer an opportunity to show work in a compelling way that will open new dialogue between the artist, the audience and the space.

an award of £500 will be made and award winner(s) will be offered a further exhibition in 2012

the open west also provides the opportunity for artists to participate in an education programme, publishes a limited edition set of artists’ prints, offers an artist’s residency at the Meantime project space and runs a series of artists’ conversations during the exhibition period

 

Conditions of Entry:

There are no geographical restrictions. Artists must be over 21. Work should be recent. Size limitations are according to available space. Provision will be made to accommodate 2D work as well as 3D

selection The 2012 exhibition will be selected by Dan Chadwick, Iain Andrews, Lyn Cluer Coleman and Sarah Goodwin. Selection will be from a maximum of four works. All artists selected for the exhibition will be invited to the Private View on Friday 2 March 2012 when the awards will be announced

the open west provides the opportunity for artists to participate in an education programme, publishes a limited edition set of artists’ prints, offers an artist’s residency and runs a series of artists’ conversations during the exhibition period

an award  of £500 will be made and winner(s) will be offered an exhibition in 2012 at the Gardens Gallery

reproduction of images If selected for the exhibition, the artist agrees to the reproduction of their work (at no fee) in association with the exhibition (including the open west and Gloucester Cathedral publicity, press, website and publications)

application fee £32.00 per application of maximum four pieces of work – fee payable by PayPal, cheque or postal order

delivery artists will be asked to deliver the works to Gloucester from Tuesday 28 Feb to Thursday

deadline for entries Monday 31 October 2011. Artists whose work is selected for exhibition will be notified by the end of November 2011.

insurance Although every care will be taken of submitted application material, responsibility for loss and damage cannot be accepted. If shortlisted for the exhibition the artist is responsible for the costs of transportation of the work to and from the specified venue. The organisers will not be responsible for any loss or damage either in transit to and from the exhibition, or during any period of storage, packing or unpacking, or in any period in which the work may be at the exhibition venue. It is strongly advised that each artist takes out their own commercial insurance to cover their work in transit and at the exhibition

collection exhibitors will be expected to collect their work promptly at the end of the exhibition, between Monday 2 to Wednesday 4 April 2012

sale of works commission on sales will be 30% (to be included in sale price if appropriate)
